Newsbin Interface and Feature Reference

This guide outlines the layout and behavior of the Newsbin interface for Newshosting users. It references all major panes, toolbars, and internal features available within version 6.60 of Newsbin.

Main Interface Elements

• Title Bar: Displays program name, build number, and current group or search tab.

• Menu Bar: Provides access to configuration, group management, and server options.

• Toolbars: Each toolbar can be enabled or disabled via View > Toolbars. Includes Main Toolbar, Groups List Toolbar, and Filter Toolbar.

• Tabs: Found below toolbars. Tabs for Groups, Search, and Internet Indexers appear depending on activity.

• Status Bar: Located at the bottom, this shows server activity, connection count, and progress indicators.

Group Pane and Download List

• The Groups Pane allows you to manage subscribed newsgroups from Newshosting.

• The Download List tracks active article retrievals and displays their status.

Internal Behavior and Storage

• Newsbin stores group headers in spool files with one data file and an index file per group.

• Header retention is set per group and may depend on Newshosting’s article retention policies.

Threading and Display

• Subject lines are parsed to detect duplicates.

• A thread tree is generated using subject text and message headers.

• The display reflects the number of parts and assembled article name.

Additional Features

• Logging window available from the toolbar.
